Project 2007 Setup can't find a version of Microsoft Office - corrupt installation

My computer crashed while installing Project 2007 from an upgrade CD.
Now when I try to run the install again I get the message "Setup can't
find a version of Microsoft Office". I have Project 2003 installed on
the PC (running Vista Ultimate). I have also inserted the Project 2003
CD but the install won't find it.

I've tried to uninstall the version of Project 2007 but get the message
"This product installation has been corrupted. Run Setup again from the
CD, DVD, or other original installation source." When I run again I
get the same error.

I've tried to do a system restore to a point before the problem, but
get the message "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your
computer's system files and settings were not changed.. Details: An
unspecified error occurred during System Restore."

I have been able to install Project 2003 from the CD, but 2007 still
fails.

Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Typically, you can restart the install
process from the 2007 Upgrade CD once you have your P2003 running smoothly.
I have the same setup you do (2003&2007 on Vista Ultimate)... when 2007 setup
asked for Project2003 it did not find it.... I had to use the CD and manully
browse to the CD before setup 2007 would cooperate. Since that time, no
troubles. But that's me, not you.

You will probably need to try an older restore point. or...
Also, from the control panel, try running the unistall from there. If
Project 2007 does not appear as an option you'll have to resort to a more
brute force approach.

A brute force approach is going to require editing registry settings and
manually deleting files. This would bring you back to a "before it happened"
scenario. However, before manually deleting files or editing the registry,
I'd see what other tricks some may post here... once you start a manual
intervention you may not be able to change approaches to get back to a more
automated setup.

If you go back far enough in time, your restore point should work. Sorry to
caveat the answer so much, perhaps others have some better ideas.

Jim,

Thanks for your reply. I've been rebuilding my PC over the last few
days as I needed to re-install Vista to resolve another problem. So if
I go back any further I might as well start the rebuild over again!!!

I tried browsing to the 2003 CD, but then I still get the same error.
I'm guessing that something in the registry is triggering the error
message.

Any ideas about what registry settings I should change?

I looked a little bit for registry settings. There are all kinds of things
for registration of Project.

Months ago, I posted this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928218/en-us
It tells you how to remove Project 2007 BETA completely. The process would
be similar, it will take you about 45 minutes.

If you are going to re-install Vista, consider justing wiping the drive
completely and starting from 0.

BTW, make sure you install Project 2003 first. Make a complete install
including 100% of the Service Packs and security updates prior to any attempt
at 2007. The current version is MS Project 2003 SP2 plus hot fixes. If you
try to update to P2003 SP2 after the install of P2007 you will have
problems.... voice of experience here.

Jim,

Thanks for your help. I've had to resort to a complete re-install of
vista on a formatted disc. Seems to work OK now.

I'd be glad to rate your reply - but I can't see how to
