??? Question about outlook formatting emails in outlook express. ???

I wonder why I am not able to use the formatting features
of Outlook Express 6.0. I am not able to changer font
size or style or any of the formatting features. Though
it appears as though all of the features that are
available in word should be available in this application
as well. When I pull down the formatting menu The
majority of my options are faded/ not availabel. This is
actually the case with probably 90% of the things in all
my menu's. I am currently very limited in what I can do
with this application.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
