Ready to put a gun to my head...Office updates

Installed Office 2008 from disk and did an update to the updater, and
updated to 12.1.0.

I need the recipe for the cocktail of updates so that I can update it
past 2.1.0. So far every update that I have downloaded has given me
the stopsign on the icon of the hard drive. And now I am at the point
of throwing this thing across the room.

Thanks for the suggestions guys... this is just damn frustrating at
this point.

Open one of the Office applications, then click on Help>Check for
Updates. This will launch Microsoft AutoUpdate, which will download all
the updates you need. Check for updates a number of times to make sure
you have all the latest updates. (The latest version is 12.2.4, by the way.)

Autoupdate downloads an update... However after it does so the update
won't install
Because the installer doesn't seem to find the right software.

I finally just reformatted the system and started from scratch, once I
did this
microsoft would update with the Autoupdate.

Crazy because I had just done this to this machine.

Did you run any applications like monolingual after you did the reformat?
