menu Tools -> Options -> Units
Is "Always offer US and Metric units" ticked?

Ah, sorry, yes. I misread your original question (how I managed to do
that, I know not!).
Anyway, I believe the default measurements are based upon which
country you are in.
Control Panel -> Regional and language Options -> Customize Regional
Options
and you will see a box to select Measurement System.

No worries! I have checked this option and it is set to US!! It worked a
month or so ago.. and now it doesnt work!!

Is the US!! a mark of surprise? Should it be US? I have no way to
tell. Mine is set to UK and offers both metric and US (used to be
called English Imperial if you don't mind :) ) units.
I think if your setting is US then you need the Measurement System box
ticked.

Everything I see is in US. Where is the Measurement System box located?

Ok, but is that what you would expect? Are you in the US? We cannot
tell from here.

From the Windows Start menu:
Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options
on the Regional Options tab there is a button "Customize" the numbers
tab has a Measurement System box.
