I have 2 "home" computers, 1 desktop, 1 notebook.
do I have to have 2 copies of Office to have it installed on both computers?
Both are for my personal use, and i use them both regularly.

Not neccessarily, depends specifically on the Version & Licence, eg some
versions/licences can be installed on three PC's, for your own or family
use.

Read the end user's license agreement (EULA) for your product. If you
already have office installed on your computer open any Office product
and click on help, you'll find a link to the EULA there or type EULA in
the help box.

If it's NOT installed yet, look here:

http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/useterms/

Select your version of Office in the drop down boxes and the EULA will
spell it out for you.

If you'd like to tell us what version you have, someone here could
answer the question for you.

In addition to what others have said here is a brief rundown on the
different versions of Office and what the EULA says:

Home & Student (or Student and Teacher if 2003 or older) - up to three
computers (two computers for S & T XP) in the house for NON-COMMERCIAL
purposes.

Office retail (full or upgrade install) - desktop and laptop for use by the
SAME PERSON.

OEM - installed on one computer and the license it tied to that computer and
can't be installed on any other machine at any time. If the machine dies,
the license also dies.
