2003 Upgrade?

Hi all,

I have Office 2000 on a 98SE box, and am setting up a new XP box. I'd
like to know if/how the upgrade version of 2003 differs from the full
version, and whether having 2000 on a different machine will be an issue
with an upgrade version. Also, will 2003 need to be activated, and will
it keep looking for an internet connection after it's activated?

Thanks!

You can see a comparison of Office 2003 with previous versions of Office.

Yes 2003 will need to be activated.

You can turn off the option for Office to search online content and customer
feedback services.

Thanks, but doesn't adress Upgrade vs Full version.

Thanks. And it won't try to connect for other reasons? I only ask
since it seems like MS has begun wanting everything to phone home these
days.

This is why I'm trying to find out more about the Upgrade. Is it going
to look for something on the machine of the earlier version? I don't
want to be outta luck since Office 2000 was on a different box.

Thanks!

The full version costs more but can be installed without having a
prior version. The upgrade version does not require that you have a
prior qualifying version installed but that you do have the
installation cd. It will ask you to insert the qualifying cd at some
point of the installation to verify that you have it. If the
qualifying version is still actively being used on another box (the
98SE box that you mentioned), then it technically doesn't qualify.
You need to remove it from the 98SE box for it to be used to qualify
on a new box. Other then that, both versions are the same.

Other then activation I haven't noticed Office phoning home other then
for the on-line help function which you can turn off.

Thanks, but doesn't address Upgrade vs. Full version.
=======================================
An upgrade version requires you have a previous version. The advantage of an
upgrade is the lower price. You need to be sure you hang on to previous
version of Office media in case you need to reinstall. The full version cost
more but doesn't require you have a previous version.

You can turn off all options that require Office 2003 to connect to the
internet. In my opinion it is harmless because it is all just for access to
additional online content and provides MS with product feedback based on
usage.

Office 2000 doesn't need to be installed you just need the Office 2000 CD to
put in the CD drive for the installer to find. If you can afford the cost I
would recommend the full version because you will have less hassle and don't
need to worry about having the previous version media if you should need to
do a reinstall.
