_derived folders

It seems every time I publish my site, even after a minor modification, my
_derived folders are re-published which takes everal minutes even on
broadband.
Is this necessary?
I am not using FP Extensions in FrontPage (2003) and they are disabled on
the host.
I do have shared borders and navigation turned on (no browse time, no
sharepoint). I am using Frontpage/FTP to publish.

That folder is needed as long as you use the FP navigation components.

Thanks Thomas, but what I can't understand is why seemingly the whole folder
and contents get uploaded each time. I have got publish set to changed pages
only and by source compare. Even without any changes to navigation!

Further to my last post I checked my web site on the host using WS_FTP Pro
and found that there are no _derived folders there except an empty one under
images.
So again it seems odd that this stuff is being uploaded and then binned when
it gets there!

The _vti folder are NEVER uploaded via FP, they are created and maintained by the extensions on the
remote server during the publishing operation.
