a quick question

When I create a table of contents I get something which looks like this

Chapter 1..................................................1
Chapter 2..................................................2

How do I do this in plain word. What I get is a ragged right edge which
looks like this

Chapter 1..................................................1
Chapter 2.............................................2
Chapter 3....................................................
.....3

Actually there is a complexitiy with this.

It really goes

Chapter 1..............................................1
Sub Heading 1....................................2
Sub Heading 2....................................2

I can't use right justify or left justfy to solve this.

Are you using a TOC field or constructing this by hand? If the latter, see
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html. If the former, does it
help to select the field and press Ctrl+Q?

You can't. The ToC is inserting tab leaders which are set to tab to the
right margin (or whatever point you choose). What are you trying to achieve
because I cannot see why anyone would want the page numbers ragged? The only
way I can see would be to manually change all the tab positions for every
entry.

Follow-up: If what you're asking is how to get numbers aligned with period
leaders, you *don't* do it by typing the periods by hand! Set a
right-aligned tab stop with a period leader. See
