a required installation file SKU111.CAB could not be found

Hi.

I have an XP with Office 2003. I've had Publisher 2003 for years and a
couple of weeks ago I installed Publisher 2007. I've been using it and it's
worked fine until this morning. Now when I try to open an existing Publisher
document (which I just used yesterday), I get an error message stating:

"Installation Error: File not Found"
A required installation file SKU111.CAB could not be found
Original Installation Source Required:

It's telling me to install my original Office 2003 CD (which I can't find).
Is there something I can do since I don't have the original CD? Plus, why
would this do this today when it's been working fine all along? I use
Publisher every day.

Thanks for any help.

You really need to find your disks. Do you have your Office 2003 disks? Is the
Publisher 2007 a trial?

This is a fix that was posted a long time ago for Office 2003. I can't guarantee
it will work for you, but without your disks it is worth a try. Be certain you
have a restore point.

If you do not have the installation cd and want to solve this issue
follow these steps: (works most of the time with all sku.cab files)

1. Click on start==>run==>type "excel /s" without quotations and click
ok.

2. Once Excel is up in safe mode with the error message in front, hold
down ctrl+Alt+Delete keys on your keyboard to bring the task manager up.

3. Click on the processes tab==>look for msiexec.exe (only the one next
to your user name), click on it and end the process.

4. Excel should be running without an error message now==>close Excel in
safe mode==>reopen it one more time in safe mode to check if it is
opening with no error message.

5. Close Excel /s and open Excel normally, it should work fine.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the advise. I was able to find the disk and it seemed to take
care of part of the problem. I'm at least now able to open the files.
However, when I open existing files, they now open up under Publisher 2003
instead of 2007 like they were doing just a few days ago. Can you advise me
on how to correct this?

Also, do you know what made this all happen in the first place so I can keep
it from happening again? I'm wondering if it had something to do with
Windows updates. Before this all happened, they had downloaded through the
night but were not yet installed. When I tried to install them, each one
failed. After extensive research I think I figured it out and they finally
installed. I had to change the manager engine or something like that in My
Computer.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks.

Hi. I never heard back from anyone so I thought I'd ask again to see if
someone could help me. This same situation has happened to me twice since I
initially asked this question and I'm not sure what it is causing it to
happen. Today when I tried to use a Publisher 2007 document, I had to
reinstall both Office 2003 and Publisher 2007 again to get it to open. Can
someone please help me figure this out? Thanks!

Thanks Mary,

Once I went in and changed the file association for just one file, then all
the files changed back to Publisher 2007 like they were before. I don't
understand why it keeps changing back to the old Publisher but it looks like
I can fix it now when it happens.

Thanks again.

Glad you have it working okay. Computers are such mysteries. Thanks for posting
back, it is appreciated.
