Accumulating tasks in Outlook

When sending or receiving, if I track tasks in the progress window I find that tasks keep accumulating even if I have only sent one message. As they accumulate, the time progress decreases. Sometimes I'll have 10-15 tasks processing when I only want to send one email! It now takes forever to download or send messages. I don't know why this is occuring - I have already checked for viruses, etc. Anyone have any clues?
