Acquiring & Coloring USA Map

R

Ralph Wilcox

I have a customer who wants a map of our USA transportation prices,
separated into three segments, with separate colors for each segment.

For example, East Coast, Middle States and West Coast.

I know there are map-making programs available, but,

1. Time is short - I need it right away. May not have time to learn
new software.

2. I may not get the business, even with the right proposal, so I need
a more cost-effective solution.

Any ideas?

The easiest way to do this is with a program such as CorelDRAW, which
includes vector art of United States and state maps that can be ungrouped,
filled with different colors, and edited in various ways. Failing that,
search Google images for "U.S. map." With any luck, you might find one that
already has the states grouped as you need, or at least one that can be
broken up and edited, though you'll still probably fare better in a drawing
program than in Word.

Examples of the results Google turns up are
http://www.acr.org/state_chap/fotos/us-map.gif and
http://www.axonix.com/images/us-map.gif. One that might be close to what you
want is http://www.abbatech.com/us-map.gif. Another interesting one (at
least the filename is intriguing) is
http://www.wildseedfarms.com/images/us-map-cut-out.gif

Good stuff, thanks for the quick response! I will give those ideas a
try.

Do you have Excel? I'm using Word & Excel 2000:

Insert --> Object --> Microsoft Map --> US with Alaska & Hawaii
Click OUTSIDE the image -- then single click on it again to select it.
Copy it in Excel and paste into Word.
Double click the image to "go into" the image and then select the title
bar -- hit delete to remove it.
Click outside the image. Size the image to the desired finished size.
Now right click on the image and Select Grouping --> Ungroup
Now you can color individual states as desired. Once complete.... using
the selection arrow on the drawing toolbar, "draw" a rectangle that 100%
encloses all of your map items. Then either right click over the selected
arrow (or from the Draw Menu) choose ReGroup.

That should give you what you want!

Good Luck!

Unfortunately, the mapping was dropped from Excel in Office XP; it's
available only through MapPoint now. :(
