Just start by seeing if your Outlook Address Book view is working as it
should. Here are the instructions for configuring the service:

I understand completely. Outlook 2007 works fine. The problem you are
having
most often arises when Outlook's transports are not installed and
configured

to

Hi Russ!
I am about to create a new profile - but want to get it right first time as
my Outlook is business critical!
I have all the instructions for backing up and re-locating the .pst file, etc.
My question - In the Outlook File there are other files in addition to
outlook.pst.
(outlook.nst, archive.pst, backup.pst, extend.dat, outlook.sharing.xml.obi,
outlook.xml.kfl) - Do I copy ALL files and rename old ones, or will the new
Outlook Profile create new versions?

Let the new profile create the other files. Obviously your archive.pst
should be kept, but there is no need to relocate it.

Sorry I can't help, but you haven't "narrowed the problem down" at all.
Contrary to your claim, this is not a known issue that anyone so far has
provided steps to reproduce. There are no incompatibilities between Outlook
2007 and Vista, so you should be very reluctant to draw such a broad
conclusion from mere anecdote.
Problems with Activities on the other hand are very common. Since Activities
are a real time search that uses Outlook's older MAPI based search functions
(as opposed to Outlook 2007's new Instant Search which uses the OS's Instant
Search engine), troubleshooting problems with Activities starts by looking
for problems with Outlook's MAPI functions, which are installed with
Outlook's Address Book engine. That is the territory you should explore when
you look for the steps that can reproduce your problem. Most problems with
Activities go away when the Outlook Address Book engine is configured
correctly for the data store in the profile.

Ok I'm Still lost.. You say that oulook uses MAPI that is how my adress book

instant search....what instant search????? again not sure what more info to

add contacts, in all prevoiuse versions of microsoft, this linked that
appoitment to the contacts history or activities. When operating on Vista it
does not. Rob

Outlook creates links using it MAPI protocols some of which are
included
in
the Outlook Address Book Service. So if activities are not appearing
that
you think should, the Outlook Address Book Service is one of the first
things to check. That's assuming of course, that you installed Outlook
clean
and actually created a new Outlook profile and data store from scratch
with
this installation.

there

Outlook

your

Hi Russ!
Finally got time to try the proposed solution. No luck! Successfully
created a new profile - pointed it at my existing pst file - syetem worked,
but when i open a contact and click on activities, i get the same old message
- nothing to show!
Really frustrating!! I have a number of email addresses, so rather than
re-create all the mail accounts, I have gone back to original profile. :(

Let the new profile create the other files. Obviously your archive.pst
should be kept, but there is no need to relocate it.

I am about to create a new profile - but want to get it right first time
as
my Outlook is business critical!
I have all the instructions for backing up and re-locating the .pst file,
etc.
My question - In the Outlook File there are other files in addition to
outlook.pst.
(outlook.nst, archive.pst, backup.pst, extend.dat,
outlook.sharing.xml.obi,
outlook.xml.kfl) - Do I copy ALL files and rename old ones, or will the
new
Outlook Profile create new versions?

Hi Russ! Away for Easter so just read your response.
Wow! And I thought I was following MS instructions to the letter!
Ok - I am where I am. I understand how to make a backup of the pst
file,
and to re-locate it to a more appropriate folder. How do I create a
"new
profile"?
Do I have to un-install and re-install Outlook, then point it at the
backed
up pst?

Upgrades NEVER "take care of data migration."
Upgrade installations are not recommended. When you attempt one you
must
create a new Outlook Profile from scratch and migrate your data to it
correctly.
The file you need to migrate is your Personal Folders file (*.pst)
It's
where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or
transfer:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

Note that some of the information on these pages is outdated and no
longer
applies to Outlook 2003 or 2007. Specifically:
1. Ignore any advice to copy your PST file to Outlook's default
location
to
connect it to your profile. Doing so only corrupts your profile. Copy
it
anywhere BUT the default location and open it within your Outlook
profile.
2. Ignore any advice that tells you to use export or import to
transfer
Outlook data. That has never been sound advice, but the process has
become
too deeply flawed now to be of any use whatsoever.

I see several other messages on this - but no answers. I upgraded
from
2003
to 2007. The upgrade took care of the data migration - when 2007
opened,
all
my 2003 data was there. So I assume the 2007 version simply used my
existing
pst file. However, my problem is that linked activities do not show
consistantly in the Activities tab of the contact. I can open a
contact,
and
there all there - close and re-open the same contact and none are
displayed!

Well if the activity links were already broken in your previous PST file,
they would not be re-established by creating a new profile that uses the
same file. You could only establish new ones.

How weird is this? Today the activities ARE showing up!!!
Maybe it took some time to index or something? Fingers crossed!
