Activities Not Showing - 2007

N

noelma

I see several other messages on this - but no answers. I upgraded from 2003
to 2007. The upgrade took care of the data migration - when 2007 opened, all
my 2003 data was there. So I assume the 2007 version simply used my existing
pst file. However, my problem is that linked activities do not show
consistantly in the Activities tab of the contact. I can open a contact, and
there all there - close and re-open the same contact and none are displayed!

Upgrades NEVER "take care of data migration."
Upgrade installations are not recommended. When you attempt one you must
create a new Outlook Profile from scratch and migrate your data to it
correctly.
The file you need to migrate is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's
where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

Note that some of the information on these pages is outdated and no longer
applies to Outlook 2003 or 2007. Specifically:
1. Ignore any advice to copy your PST file to Outlook's default location to
connect it to your profile. Doing so only corrupts your profile. Copy it
anywhere BUT the default location and open it within your Outlook profile.
2. Ignore any advice that tells you to use export or import to transfer
Outlook data. That has never been sound advice, but the process has become
too deeply flawed now to be of any use whatsoever.

Answer is the same. If you want to know how you migrated your data
incorrectly, you must tell us how you did it. As it is, you must create a
new profile and migrate your data correctly. It is your profile that is
corrupt.

Hi Russ! Away for Easter so just read your response.
Wow! And I thought I was following MS instructions to the letter!
Ok - I am where I am. I understand how to make a backup of the pst file,
and to re-locate it to a more appropriate folder. How do I create a "new

Do I have to un-install and re-install Outlook, then point it at the backed

First, thanks for all of the information and websites everyone has added.

Upgraded long ago... using Outlook 2007 (12.0.6316.5000) SP1
I followed the steps and created a new profile. Created a contact, added an
appointment to the calendar, and created a new task. All are tied to the
contact. Still can't see any activities for the contact. Checked my
settings and "Contact Linking" is selected. Not sure if it matters, but I
don't use Outlook for email and have not configured that portion.

I have read and searched for many hours... not sure what to do. You all are

Thanks so much for your help!!! Umm, too long ago to remember how I
migrated the data. I am fine my original data/profile won't link... Going
forward and starting from scratch...

I followed the steps, in the links provided earlier in the post, to create a
new profile in Outlook 2007. Now I have two profiles and choose when
launching.

It is in this brand new profile I am still unable to view activities for a
contact.
In this new profile I created the first contact "A". Then when I added an
appointment on the calendar, I selected the "A" as the contact. After that,
I added a task and again, selected "A" as the contact.

Sorry I wasn't clear on this in the first post. THANKS!!

So how is Outlook supposed to create these links if you haven't enabled its

First, thanks for all of the information and websites everyone has
added.

Upgraded long ago... using Outlook 2007 (12.0.6316.5000) SP1
I followed the steps and created a new profile. Created a contact,
added
an
appointment to the calendar, and created a new task. All are tied to
the
contact. Still can't see any activities for the contact. Checked
my
settings and "Contact Linking" is selected. Not sure if it matters,
but
I
don't use Outlook for email and have not configured that portion.

I have read and searched for many hours... not sure what to do. You
all
are
so knowledgeable and helpful!

THANKS!!

Soory russ you are not understanding the problem. at the bottom of an
appointment there is a box marked "contact" any contact I put in that box,
used to show up under history or activities in all other versions of outlook.
judging by the number of posts, I am not wrong here, this fuction does not
work properly in outlook 2007. these entries do not always show up in
activities.. thanks Rob

I understand completely. Outlook 2007 works fine. The problem you are having
most often arises when Outlook's transports are not installed and configured
properly. Hence my question which still awaits your answer. You also need to
ensure that your mail transports are working correctly and that Outlook is
your default mail client.

Outlook creates links using it MAPI protocols some of which are included in
the Outlook Address Book Service. So if activities are not appearing that
you think should, the Outlook Address Book Service is one of the first
things to check. That's assuming of course, that you installed Outlook clean
and actually created a new Outlook profile and data store from scratch with
this installation.
