presumed that when i upgraded office 2000 would be automatically uninstalled.

What should have been automatically uninstalled {if you choose to uninstall
old versions during installation of Office 2003} are those Office 2000
applications included in your edition of Office 2003. If you had an Office
2000 application {perhaps Publisher} that was not in your Office 2003, that
application would remain intact.

Give the above and assuming you have no left over Office 2000 applications
that you need, you can safely use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall.
