Adding movie clip to powerpoint

S.Z. Reuter

Hi,

I am trying to add a movie (*.avi) to a powerpoint presentation. It will
play the sound but there's no image. Can anybody help with this?

Ideally I would like to add only part of this movie (i.e., a clip) but at
the moment if I could at least get the image to appear that would be very
good.

I am working in Tiger and Powerpoint 2004 for Mac.

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi,

Most movies in avi format will play just fine, but there are few oddball
formats within avi that won't play.

To test, use QuickTime to open the file. If it plays in QuickTime it
should work OK with PowerPoint because PowerPoint uses QuickTime to play
avi files.

If the file won't play in QuickTime then it won't play in PowerPoint.
But I presume something you have does play the file. If that is the case
then you can create a hyperlink to the avi file and then that player
will take over and handle playing the avi, although it will be in the
player window instead of the PowerPoint window.

Hi,

Thanks for this. I tried playing it in quick time, but again, there's only
sound and no image. I have a video player (VLC) and creating a hyperlink in
power point did work so that'll do. But do you have any idea why there's no
image in quick time? This was a problem on my previous mac too, which is why
I got the other player.

Sarah.

Hi again,

Although there is a single file extension of .avi there can be many ways
to encode the file. This is why you sometimes hear people plead for
standards - so that all the various codecs will work with all the
various players.

But people who want you to use their own special way of doing things
create codecs that work only with their decoders. You could ask Apple to
support that particular codec, but if it is too oddball or the owner of
the codec won't share it, then you have to use the special player.
