Adding styles to many document-templates at once

P

Phil

Hi. I have 20 pre-existing documents already on my hard disk.

I just now defined 5 new styles and put them in normal.dot, and I want
to make these styles available in all 20 pre-existing documents.

What's the fastest way to do this? (not using the Style Organizer for
one document at a time, right?)

Thank you,
-Phil

I would recommend recording a macro using the Organizer to copy your new
styles (copying them three times). Then run your macro in each of the other
documents.

I would _not_ recommend attaching the template with update styles checked.
You are likely to be unhappy with the results and it is more work than
running the macro.

Why is it best to copy them three times?

Because styles that are linked to each other lose their links when copying
only once. This is a known problem. I know that copying all desired styles
once is a problem. I know that copying them once and then again and then
again results in perfect copies as far as the linking problem goes. I
haven't tried only copying once in the latest versions of Word but don't
know that this has been fixed. It is easy to do and assures that there are
no problems.

Note that styles with automatic numbering take extra care in setting up.
