Administration of numbering in long lists.

I'm working on a multichoice-test with 70 questions in
W2002. Each question is formatted with the style Heading
1. 4 alternatives to each question are
numbered from a. through c. These are formatted with the
style "Numbered list".

Like this:

1 Question one
a. alt. 1
b. alt. 2
c. alt. 3
d. alt. 4
2 Question two
a. alt. 1
b. alt. 2
c. alt. 3
d. alt. 4
And so on....

Several times I' ve had to go through the document
renumbering the alternatives. There is, as far as I can
see, no tools to "lock" the numbering. W2002, at some
point renumbers all my 70 questions as if it was one list.

As to the numbering of the 70 questions, I've had no
trouble. This plea applies only to the 280 alternatives.

Anyone who can show me where the lock is (and the key)

Hi Hans Petter

I would use Heading 1 for the questions and Heading 2 for the
alternative answers. Set up the numbering as described in

How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word
Document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

When you come to the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog, and you are
setting up the numbering for Level 2 (to which you will link Heading 2
style), delete everything in the number format box, and then, in the
Number Style box, choose "a, b, c".

You can format the Heading 2 style to have the font and text size that
you prefer (ie it doesn't have to be large and bold).

Hope this helps.

You could, however, equally well use List Number and List Number 2. If you
select the first pane in the Outline Numbered list gallery (the one that has
1), a), etc.), then it's just a matter of changing the parentheses to
periods to get the numbering you want. Given the number of questions you
have, I would definitely advise formatting the Level 1 numbering as aligned
right rather than left so that numbers will align on the period.
