After Company Merger, Users Can't Change E-mail Servers

W

Will James

We just merged with another company.

We will continue to use our e-mail server in Houston: HOUSTONMX1. It is
Exchange 5.5 SP4 on Win2K.

I know, I know. We are going to upgrade, but the merger has delayed that
for now. In the meantime, I need to get this up and running.

We are taking the users who have merged into our company OFF their old
server: DENVER_MAIL.

All the clients are using XP SP2 and Outlook 2003.

I have deleted all their profiles, and tried to recreate them putting our
mail server in the correct spot. The clients try to log on, and they even
get to the logon screen, but then Outlook hangs for 5 minutes saying:
Unable to display folder. Network problems are preventing connection to the
Microsoft Exchange Server computer.

I can ping HOUSTONMX1 without a problem. Very good response. However, I
am convinced it is a name resolution issue. For some reason, the Outlook
client must be trying to get back to its old server, or is having a problem
resolving the name HOUSTONMX1.

I have tried putting the IP address in the profile instead of host name, but
that does not work.

These new companies I am trying to get on line are one their own AD domain.
Do I need to add a DNS record in there so they can find HOUSTONMX1?

Why don't the Outlook 2003 clients use hosts files to resolve names?

Thanks
