ALT+F9 worked

Thank you very much Graham,
Pressing ALT+F9 totally solved my problem. Not only did it bring up the
equation in the first instance of { EMBED Equation.3 } in one of my Word
documents, but then all instances in all documents also showed the
equations. And I am now able to insert new equations in Word
documents. All of this continued to work after rebooting.
