Appling bold changes all styles...new (strange) behavior

C

CF

In a MS Work 2003 document if I select a paragraph and modify
formatting (bold, italics, etc) then it is automatically applied to
every other similar paragraph in the document. I think this is
applying the format to tha style but not sure.

To fix this you need to do an undo and it then undoes all other
paragraphs but keeps the current. A second undo will undo that as
well.

This seems to "planned" to be a bug although why anyone would want it
I do not know...

This only happens on some documents and not on new one so my assumtion
is this is a stye or options setting... Anyone know how to turn it
off?

thx in advance to anyone that responds

Hi,

this is a Word for Macintosh newsgroup, but since the problem you're
describing is a common one, the advice which I'm going to give you should be
valid even for Word 2003 on Windows. Point your cursor in the paragraph in
which the initial formatting happens, then click on Format>Style. You should
now see a dialogue window with a list of styles on the left side, and,
unless you are using a custom style, the word "Normal" should be
highlighted. Now click on Modify in the lower right corner. In the new
window that shows up, make sure you de-select the checkbox next to
"Automatically update". Click on OK as many times as necessary to get back
to your document, and you should no longer see this erratic formatting.

As you've said yourself, this is caused by styles; if Normal is set to
automatically update and you change a paragraph based on Normal, every
paragraph that's based on Normal is going to adopt the same formatting. Turn
the automatic update function off, and it should no longer happen.
