applying a character style

Hi
I'm working with Word 2000. If I position the mouse pointer within a word and apply a character style, the whole word will be formatted with the corresponding character style
One of my colleges (working with Word 2000) can't do so. He has to highlight the whole word to apply a character style to the whole word
Does this feature depend on settings? Which setting causes this effect

Try Tools > Option > Edit 'When selecting, automatically select whole
word'.
