Applying a different calendar to a task.

I was working on a task that had different working hours e.g. I had to use a
12 hours a day 7 days a week. When I applied by new 12/7 caledar it
calculated the finish date correctly but it did not change the duration. If
my original duration was 16.88 days using an 8 hours day 5 days per week
calendar, what can I do so MS Project calculate the correct duration which is
11.25 days using the new calendar.

P.S. Like I mentioned before I applied the new calendar and it calculated
the correct Finish the problem is the Duration stays the same in this case it
shows 16.88 days which is misleading. Any help is highly appreciated. Thank
You!

Hi,

Duration has nothing to do with calendars. Duration is calculated by taking
the number of duration minutes and then dividing by the hours per day and
hours per week settings under Tools, Options. These settings apply to all
tasks in the file and to avoid problems they should be exactly the same as
all other projects in your organization.

Finish date is calculated by taking the number of duration minutes and
iterating through the calendar until all minutes have been accounted for and
the end of the last minute is the date and time of the task's finish.

This is by design and is the least confusing and problematic way of doing it
so don't look for a change any time soon!

Also remember to select the option "Scheduling ignores resource calendar", as
the resource calendar override project and task calendars until this option
is selected.

Hi,

AFAIK the resource calendar does not override the task calendar.
The task is scheduled on minutes when BOTH task and resoruce calendar show
working time.

Prior to either assigning resources or designating a task calendar, a task's
placement is governed by the Project Calendar. If a task calendar is
designated on the Advanced tab, that calendar takes over control of the
task's placement in the schedule. If a resource is then assigned, the
resource calendar takes over control *unless* the check box "task calendar
overrides resource calendar" on the advanced tab is turned on. As I put it
to my classes, if a task calendar isn't specified or if one is but that box
is turned off, the task schedule follows the assigned resource's work
schedule. If there is a task calendar designated and the check box is
turned on, it means the resource's work hours during that time must follow
the task's requirements.

Hi All,

Not quite.
The checkbox is labeled "Scheduling ignores resource calendars" and the
behavior is either only the task calendar plays a role or both task and
resource calendars play.
You cannot have a resource calendar overriding a task calendar; when there
is a task calendar it always plays its part.

You're absolutely correct, I had remembered the box backwards - that's what
I get for writing in the newsgroups at 0530 in the morning, "o'dark thirty
hours" - Old timers disease is a terrible thing LOL
