Archive vs Backup

Hi,

I have a question. Is there a need to archive if I have plenty of harddrive
space and I back up my .pst file twice a day? I am not sure I understand the
purpose.

Me neither. I think auto-archive is more for people who don't clean up their
mail and still want an empty mailbox. ;-)

Backing up a pst-file doesn't empty it archiving does as it moves old
content to another pst-file named archive.pst by default.

Backing up the pst-file on your computer (or even better; another computer
or removable media) is the way to go in case disaster strikes.

Unfortunately, the amount of hard drive space that you have has no
bearing on the maximum size of your .pst file in Outlook, which is
less than 2GB...at least until Outlook 2003 increases that maximum
size by 10X! Once your .pst size gets close to 2GB, it's going to
become non-functional in Outlook 2002 & earlier versions. Therefore,
the primary purpose of archiving your messages is to keep your data
source at a manageable level.
