arial unicode MS line spacing

When I include an arial unicode MS symbol in a line of text in MS word I
find the line spacing automatically enlarges, for that line only. This
gives an intidy appearance to the text. Can anyone advise me how to
eliminate this problem? I am using MS Word 2002.

I don't know the specifics of font spacing, but I would assume it is because
the buffers (clearance space above and below the ascender and descender
respectively.

This from a web tutorial on font size:

**************************
Point size is the height of the font from its lowest descender to its
highest ascender plus a small buffer to prevent descenders of one line of
type from colliding with ascenders in the next line. 12 points = 1 pica, 1
point = 1/72".
**************************

(Above is a direct copy/paste. I apologise for the archaic, idiotic,
obfuscatory Imperial inch thingies that even the British have got rid of,
yet Americans inexplicably persist with well over 200 years after snatching
their time from the British Empire. Although watching the criminal
ineptitude unfolding in Louisiana and bordering States, one can see a
definite pattern in an entrenched mindset.)
