Assigning Recurring Tasks?

When I try to assign a recurring task, the system grays out the "keep an
updated copy of this task on my task list" option.

For a non-recurring task, I can select to keep an updated copy on my task
list.

Is there some rule against receiving updated copies of recurring tasks? Is
it an MS Exchange setting?

We use Office 2000 (SR-1) and MS Exchange Server.
