AT&T settings

J

jallen

I have been informed by my service provider (sbcglobal.net which is
now AT&T) that this coming August all e-mail POP and SMPT settings
will have to be changed or I will no longer be able to use Entourage.
I have been in contact with the people at AT&T and have tried to
change the settings. I could send mail but not receive it. So I went
back to my original settings and it works. But what will happen in
August, I don't know. I run OS X version 10.4.9. Has anyone out there
been able to successfully change settings? If so what did you do.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

This sounds like the new security setting implemented by AT&T Yahoo.See
these instructions:

One of the changes was to change the name from smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
to smtp.att.yahoo.com. The other was they changed to SSL and the ports.

I made the change last month and it was painless.

I am having this same problem and can't get this to work. I took my
mac to the Apple store and they couldn't figure it out either? I've
followed the suggestions and I still get the error box with my email.
Other suggestions?

I am having the same problem. When I first tried the changes AT&T
sent, I was able to receive mail but not send. I just tried the
changes referred to here by Diane, and now I can send, but I can't
receive?? I get the message: Security Failure. Data Encryption
Error.

I'm on OSX 10.3.9 and Entourage X for the Mac, Service Release 1
(10.1.4).

Help?

Try upgrading to 10.1.9. <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx>

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

Thanks for those suggestions.

I upgraded my Office X. I repaired my Permissions. I verified and
repaired my Keychain, which had errors related to the e-mail
settings. However, I still get an error on the receiving end. When
I then go back and verify the Keychain, it again has an error:

"Item pop.att.yahoo.com has unspecified value for port attribute"

I have the settings done exactly as displayed in your earlier link
(with no spaces). Any other thoughts?

Bonnie,

Please double-check your SMTP "....advanced receiving options" to be
sure you only have the first box CHECKED and "995" typed into the box
to the right of the second line. The second line should NOT be checked
but must have the 995 port entered.

Thanks, but I have done, and re-done i8t, and rechecked it over and
over again. It is correct. It is not working.

Bonnie,

I suggest you DELETE the account, quit Entourage then restart and enter
the data again. Something must be hosed in your configuration.

Thanks again. I did what you suggest. Still no change. I checked
the keychain again after it failed. Error in keychain:

"Item "pop.att.yahoo.com" has unspecified value for port attribute"

Oddly enough, sometimes the smtp works, and sometimes it fails.

Maybe it's time to start using Apple's Mail client *sigh*

Try checking in the second line. Maybe on your setup you need to check it.

For grins I just tried checking the 2nd box and it will not stay checked.

took the words right out of my mouth. :) Mine won't stay checked
either.

Test Entourage in a new User. Go to System Preferences and create a new Test
User. See if the problem exists there in a new setting.

Good idea. I tried that, and then set up a new account in Entourage.
It still didn't work. I do appreciate the help.

I have a very old account, as I was one of the first DSL users with
what was then Pacific Bell, which became SBC, which became AT&T. I
still have my original e-mail address with pacbell.net. I wonder if
it might have something to do with that?

Your ISP should be able to monitor the traffic on their end to see what is
failing. You can use tcpflow to monitor the traffic and that should give you
the ammunition to talk to your ISP about your problem.

Test your network with tcpflow. See directions here:

Thanks Diane, I will download and do that. And I've started working
the issue internally. I actually work for AT&T, but not the Internet
group. FYI - there are also some PC users with Outlook having
problems. I'll let you know what happens.
