Audio

Kevin

Good Day. I wish to use Publisher for a website that contains pictures and
an MP3 or other format audio file. I also wish for the audio to begin
streaming without being at the mercy of the visitors media player settings.
Using a media player control play button on the site would work but the audio
needs to begin playing immediately rather than waiting for the entire audio
file to download.

Is this possible with Publisher?
Is this possible with FrontPage? I read where FrontPage will be
discontinued soon, other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Lemme add to SteveNC's comment

Please don't
and
Streaming requires a host that provides streaming...and...it cost more money
for a streaming host.

Most viewers run like heck from a site with sound that they cannot control
I know I do!

There is not much more to add. I suppose if I capitalise it, i.e.

PLEASE DON'T

it might make it more useful.

Strongarming a user's browser into playing a particular audio file is at
best neither here nor there. At worse it will aggravate the hell out of
your visitors (who may (like me) be listening to their OWN music and so have
no idea to have your music filtering through it; or may be on a
restricted-bandwidth connection where it would be jittery, in low quality,
and possibly cost a lot of money if the user is accessing through a GPRS
connection).

I know of no way to do it in Publisher, and if I did, I wouldn't tell you.

Most annoying website designers who want to push music at you will use Flash
to do it (and design the entire website in Flash, aggravating further
users).

There is a separate newsgroup for asking questions about web design. It is
microsoft.public.publisher.webdesign.

Re-reading your post, it appears you might not want to strongarm the user's
browser into playing.

The key here is to trust that the user has their media player configured
correctly. If they do, then the music will start to play when a sufficient
of the file has downloaded to allow theoretically seamless playback
(buffering). If the user is on a low-band connection, they are likely to
want to download the song before listening to be able to hear it at a
half-decent quality.

Websites have little or no control over third-party software on a user's
computer. The way to gain such control is to embed a plugin into the page
(e.g. Flash Player or a custom plugin you've written to do exactly what you
want). This would be easier to do in FrontPage than Publisher (as FrontPage
is actually designed for editing web pages, and has access to the source
HTML code through the IDE, etc.)

Although FrontPage is due to be discontinued in the next version of Office,
that is because what was FrontPage is being taken and rebranded as part of a
new electronic productivity suite as Expression Web Designer (or similar).
What would have been called FrontPage 12 is now being called Expression Web
Designer (or similar). So FrontPage isn't really being discontinued at all.

I too despise music on a website. I literally avoid site I know that have
it. And if I happen across one that has music, I close out of it as quickly
as I can.

Thank you again to those who took the time to respond. I agree with each of
you that unwanted or unrequested music on a website is annoying and a turn
off.

I have not made my intention clear. Visitors to this site will actually be
looking for the audio that will support photographs also on the site. My
experience to date with attaching the audio file within Publisher caused a
problem with my hosting company which did not fully support Publisher. I
then tried making a link to the audio which worked but at that point I have
learned that I am at the mercy of the media player and settings on the
visitors computer. It has already been proven in my tests that I can't rely
on a potential visitor to have the proper player settings or know how to get
there. One potential client was turned off because it was too long before
the audio on a test site done in Publisher would play.

What I believe I was looking for was the ability to show a media player
control (play, pause, stop etc.) that I have seen on other sites so the
visitor could launch the audio at will and not have to wait for the entire
file to load before playing.

From what I can pick out from the comments posted is that Publisher can't
get me where I need to be, FrontPage (or next version) might work, and
learning HTML will get me where I need to be.

Thank you again to those who took time to respond. Please understand that
editorializing and short unhelpful answers are not very useful.

Take care all. God Bless.

You really need to be using FrontPage. Pub is okay for small sites that
don't include a lot of bells and whistles but you'll be much happier using a
program that was developed for website design.

I am currently working on a website for a non profit group. I would like to
add an audio player and allow the users to sample snipets of songs. I have
done the website in publisher 2003 but will be converting to Front Page. I
would like to add the player in publisher before I convert. Any advice.
