Auto index

I want to create a template which has a text in the page
as letter/2004/xxx, one i save the first document the xxx
will be 001 next document saved using this template will
have the xxx as 002 and so on . is it possible. i.e
keeping an index of all documents saved using this
template. i use Word2002
