auto text brings in symbols, not text

I am having trouble with several auto text entries bringing in symbols such
as boxes or exclamation points instead of the actual text entry. Does anyone
know what causes this and how to fix it? It is on entries that previously
worked and it is only on a few entries in auto text, not all. I have word
2000.
