Autocad links in Powerpoint files -- automatic versus manual updates

We have just upgraded to AutoCAD 2004 and have Powerpoint (2000 SP-3)
files with AutoCAD files linked in. Now I notice that when we print,
it automatically updates the link, which we do not want. This happens
even if the link is set to manual. Has anyone else had this
experience?

This does seem odd. How were the files linked in the first place .. step by
step?

Do you need to be able to update the links manually at other times?

Or would a solution that utterly severs the links be ok? If so, ungroup and
regroup the drawings.

We definitely need to maintain a link. The AutoCAD files are used
from other applications. The AutoCAD files were linked using the
"Insert, Object, Create from File, Browse, and then click the link
box." We would not want to sever the link. I have just found that
some machines here have this problem and some don't. Now I am trying
to figure out what the differences are.
