Autoinstall of Add-In?

Is it advisable to attempt to have an Add-In automatically install itself
into the proper folder? Or does that run into security risks? What about
Adding it or Trusting it? I'm just trying to make things very simple with
very few steps. (Though it could be argued that if the user can't follow
three steps to where to put the Add-In and how to add and trust it, they may
need more help than my little macros!)

Not to install itself, but to be installed there by an installer program.

Not that I am partularly aware of - what sort of risks did you have in mind?

What are you trying to achieve here - for your add-in to load every time
word starts?

I would like to create and distribute an add-in. My thought was to send it
to those who want it as an email attachment, where the user could SaveAs
onto their machine. I had the idea that an AutoOpen macro could check to
see if it was in their username Start folder; if not, do a SaveAs to there
with a .dot extension, thus loading itself. From there, the add-in and the
macros it contains should be available every time Word starts up.

While some of my coworkers are very familiar with writing and formatting
documents, exploring the macro and security menus gets them nervous. I was
hoping to make the process as easy as possible with as few steps as
required. Also, our work environment is very security conscious - I'm
trying to get a VB6 program to use the FSO to copy some files and I'm
getting Permission denied errors! SO I just wanted to try and avoid those
areas frequented by paranoid IT departments!

If your work environment is so security conscious, then your problem is not
technical, it is organisational, and therefore your solution must be the
same. Go and talk to your IT department about ways of installing the add-in
that will be acceptable to them.
