Automatically update "Filename & Path Footer"

I know how to add the footer showing the file name and path, but I want to
know if it is at all possible to "trace" the change in path?? ie, if say I
created a document on my desktop, it will show the path to the desktop. But
if I then save that file or move that file from the desktop, to say my
documents folder, the path remains as desktop. Is there not a way to
automatically change the path, if the documents' path changes?

I know you can right click and update field, but for computer illiterate
people it would be easier for it to automatically update.

Does it update automatically in newer versions of office?

As far as I know, Word 2003 is the newest version available
today. What newer versions are you referring to?
