update. tried some of your suggestions...the avi file plays fine with
mplay32.exe, but when imported into powerpoint 2003 (office) on a
vaio/windows xp/sp2 machine, you just get an empty imported box and no video.
interestingly it does play fine in powerpoint at work, which is nt. was
going to download indeo xp for windows from ligos.com, if that would help?

It sounds like one possibility is that the path to the video file is too long.
Try moving everything to C:\Test. Delete the video and then reinsert it,
linking to its new location. Does that help?

If the video file is stored in the bowels of \My Documents, the fully qualified
path to the file can easily exceed 128 characters in length. PowerPoint will
have difficulty in locating the file if that is the case.

so i just tried that, or i think i did. i copied the file, placed it into
the "uppermost" portion of the c drive, and named it "test" (therefore i
think that would result in c:/test). it still does not work. it imports ok,
asks me if i want it to run automatically or when clicked, and then does not
play. interestingly, the first frame shows when clicked (or when clicked to
stop), but in between the screen of the video is black (or blank).
