backgrounds-slide design

Hello. For the first time, I went to the "slide design" function and began
clicking through all of the possibilites. Unfortunately, I did not notice
that each time I clicked it was automatically changing all the slides I'd
already completed. Not only did this ruin two hours of work and destroy
every slide in my presentation, but now, I can not get the slide design
function to go away. I can not fix the ruined slides nor can I get a new
slide to come up without it having one of the "slide design" backgrounds.
How do I fix this problem, please?

In PPT 2003,

Select the appropriate slides in the slide taskpane on the left.

In the design taskpane on the right, click the arrow to the right of one of
the design thumbnails. (The arrow appears when you hover your mouse over one
of the design thumbnails.) Select "apply to selected slides" from the
dropdown.

Thanks for answering. When I did as you suggested, nothing changed. All of
the slides remained with whichever slide design had been clicked. However,
after I made my post, I discovered that if I went to format>background
instead of format>slide design and clicked "omit background graphics from
master" I could then get rid of the slide design. I'm new to P.P. so I find
all this a bit confusing. It seemed like going to format>slide design has
some bugs in it. For one, it seems inefficient for slide design to be so
automatic as to immediately change ALL your slides merely by clicking on the
choices. Then, doing what you suggested appears to be a function you engage
AFTER all slides have changed, shouldn't the program ask you whether to apply
the design first? Obviously, there's a lot I don't understand here. Thank
you for your help.
