Backing Up Normal

M

MC

I've spent a long time creating a Normal template that incorporates all
my customizations - fonts, section break, numbering, toolbars etc, and
on occasion I have had to scrap the Normal and start again.

The last time I did this I made a copy of Normal and saved it under a
different name in a location far, far away from Word... and since then I
have been able to use this "clean" copy on the one or two occasions
Normal has failed or become corrupted, rather than start again from
scratch. So far with no problems.

I see the Wisdom of the Years is speaking, Matthew!

It doesn't bear thinking about the time and skill we put into modifying the
Normal template to satisfy our idiosyncrasies, er, need for business
efficiency, does it? Word is such a mongrel in so many ways that the
consolation of being able to bend it to our will is enormous. No other
software is so capable of being customized. When I have to use Word on
someone else's computer I am whacked back to half speed -- no, worse. :)

Cheers,

Clive

You don't have a USB stick, Clive?? I wouldn't leave home without it :)

Yeah. The USB stick is not the *BACKUP* :)

It's a "Controlled Copy". The BACKUP is on my mail server. The Master Copy
is on my server at home. The "In Use" copy is on my desktop at work. There
is another "In Use" copy on the Macintosh laptop I am typing this from.

I think I'm covered :)

Cheers

What? -- you only back it up on *one* USB stick, John? :-|

how do you sync all those versions without doing a lot of uploading and
mirroring with a FTP program.

I don't bother. My core logic hasn't changed significantly for about three
years.

Every so often, I upload the most recent version to my mail server which is
accessible everywhere, then download it at home/work/mining camp, as the
mood strikes me.

Cheers
