Baffling Print Problem

Brand new print cartridge. Multipurpose machine. The "Copy" function prints
beautifully.
But printing from a Word document the first paragraph is OK, then the lines
become more and more faint, until they're not printing at all.
I've never seen this happen before and am baffled as to how to fix it.
Any suggestions?
