Baseline Work not adding up

Hi,

I'm doing some reporting which includes the Baseline work field.

The problem I have is that in some project plans the Total baseline
work (according to the Gantt View) does not equal the sum of all the
resources baseline work (according to the Resource Usage view). I'm
under the impression that each resource's baseline work added together
on a project should equal the total baseline.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks
Nick

By chance, do you have any tasks in the project that meet the following
criteria:

1. You have not assigned any resources to the task
2. You specified a Work value for the task

That would cause the problem you see. Just a thought. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the response.

To answer your question - all Tasks are assigned at least one resource
and pretty much every task has a Work value.
I'm not sure what difference having a work value set can make?

Thanks,
Nick

In the Gantt Chart view, you can insert the Work column by right-clicking
any column header, selecting the Insert Column command from the shortcut
menu, selecting the Work field, and clicking OK. Even though you might have
no resources assigned to a task, you can type an estimated amount of work to
be performed on that task in the Work column. Thus, if you have resources
assigned to all tasks except one or two, and on those one or two tasks you
have specified a Work value, and then you baseline the project, the Baseline
Work will total up differently between the Gantt Chart view and the Resource
Usage view.

It was just a thought that might explain the differences you see. Perhaps
the others have some ideas for you as well.

Dale,

I see what you mean, but unfortunately it's not the cause.

I'm having the same problem on various plans.
Some of the plans do have no resources assigned to certain tasks - but
those tasks contain 0 work value and were baselined with this 0 value
as well, so they count nothing towards the plan's total baseline.

Anyone got any ideas???

Thanks heaps,
Nick

Nick,

Do you get this problem even with new plans that you create?

Also, is it possible that on these plans, tasks and resources were
deleted from the resource sheet after baselining.

We're having exaclty the same problem. Our baseline values for work and cost
don't agree when we run the 'Analyze Time Scaled Data in Excel' Wizard from
the Gantt view as opposed to the Resource Usage View (all criteria for the
wizard is the same in both cases).

It is interesting to note however, that if we view the baseline information
in Project, they agree between the two views and the Wizard run from the
Resource Usage view. It is only when we run the wizard from the Gantt view
that we get a different value.

Something not right in the Wizard?

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I think our problem is basically a process one. The plan owners chop
and change resources between tasks. The plans do get re-baselined at
times but only selected tasks and the only correctness checking of
baselines occurs on the tasks. I think since the assignments are not
being rebaselined when changed we end up with the differences between
resource and task baselines.

Thanks for your help guys.
