basic question - how to get safari and mail to launch Word

I think I'm having a blond moment...Safari and Mail have stopped
opening Word documents, not sure why but how can I restore this
function?
I'm using the beta version of Safari 3.0.2, Mail 2.1 and OSX 10.4.10
TIA

What happens when you try? Is MS Office fully updated?

Have you tried running Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions?

Hmm. Here, neither Safari 2 nor Safari 3 have ever opened Word docs
regardless of whether I have "automatically open safe files" set in
prefs.
Colour me blonde!

I never have that pref set, because it is an attack vector. There is
safe and there is safe. Not even jpgs are completely safe.

I expect to click on the ref to the Word doc and have Safari download
it to my downloads folder. To be safe, I right-click on any such links
and select "Download Linked File" to give me every possible chance to
catch naughtiness before it spreads. I might even drag it to my sandbox
account's drop box and open it from there, away from all my good stuff.

On the other hand, I can't find a way to stop mail opening a Word
attachment. Unlike .pdf it won't automatically display Word docs in
line, but I can double-click on the attachment reference in the mail
message, and Word will fire up and open it.
