Word v.X freezes

Hi,

I have had a recurrent problem with Word v.X freezes. In general, what
happens is that I will have a fairly large Word document open, and I
will start typing (or editing) in the middle of it when, suddenly, I
will no longer see any new typing coming up on the screen. Then, I get
the "beachball of death". If I go to the dock and click on the Word
icon, I get the "Application is not responding" message, with the
option to force click. Once this has happened to a document, I can no
longer use it. The only way I can continue to work on it is to copy the
entire document into a new document, and save the new doc. Then it will
be usable for a while again. I have also noticed that this only seems
to happen when the document has Endnote embedded references in it,

Information: G5/dual 2.0 Gig (revA) with 1 Gig RAM. OSX.3.7, with all
Apple updates. Word v.X, with all updates. Endnote 7, again with all
updates (as far as I know). I usually have Word, Endnote (I'm not sure
if this ever happens when Endnote isn't open), Safari, Mail, Groupwise,
and a couple of other applications open. Anyone know what the problem
is? Or, more importantly, how I could fix it?

TIA

You can work through the standard fixes listed here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

As far as EndNote goes--to avoid the possibility of problems, I would say
turn off the Instant Formatting feature. If you have it on, conceivably it's
bogging down checking for that (except that since I don't use that feature,
I'm just guessing).

You might also want to try the corrupt doc fixes, maybe first.
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DocumentCorruption.htm
(hit reload a few times in Safari, if that doesn't work, try Explorer)

Since I'm quite superstitious about EndNote (though I haven't given OS X
versions much of a chance), I tend to only insert the raw data fields on
anything I am editing, and to keep them unformatted--when I am sending
something off, then I do a Save As, run EndNote formatting, email that
version, continue to work on my own with the plain EndNote fields. Objective
being to minimize the things EndNote needs to keep track of and might
possibly confuse. Not sure whether others would agree it's necessary.
