BCM in Outlook 2003 with Vista

I am running Vista Business and Outlook 2003, but have failed repeatedly to
load BCM. It seems that both BCM and SP4 require me to load the other one
first.

If I start by trying to load BCM first, .Net loads OK, but when I start to
load BCM I get a "Known compatibility" warning which leads me to the MS
website - and eventually SP4. However if I ignore that warning and attempt
to load BCM I get through to the BCM licence page OK but then get "Setup
failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup
error logs for more information." The installation then terminates.

If instead I attempt to install SP4 for Outlook 2003 with BCM Update, I get
firstly a warning that Outlook is running (but it isn't), and then "BCM is
not installed on this machine. This program can only install the Service
Pack if the product is already installed."

I am using the CDs originally supplied with Office Professional Edition
2003.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I have an idea what's going on with the "warning that Outlook is
running (but it isn't)".

Outlook is probably running in the background (there's a variety of
reasons why it might), and the fact that it is, made cause problems
with setup.

Run Task Manager and look for an OUTLOOK.EXE process. Select it and
click "End Process". Wait a minute to make sure it doesn't restart
automatically. If it keeps restart, you need to find out what's making
it run. One typical reason is that your phone is trying to sync to it.

Once the Outlook process is not running, trying installing SP4 again.
You will need to have an earlier version of Outlook installed because
SP4 is just a Service Pack--the files that have changed--and not a
full release.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid it didn't work.

You were correct that Outlook was still running, so I closed it down. But
SP4 doesn't want to load unless you have BCM already installed, and although
I can get BCM to start to install, it then gives the same old message "Setup
failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup
error logs for more information."

So I'm back with the chicken and the egg, and neither wants to go first!

Thanks, and definitely some success, in that I did manage to install BCM 2003
V2. However installation of SP4 stalled with a warning "Setup failed to
install the required component Microsoft SQL Server Express (MSSMLBIZ).
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager Update (SP4)
cannot continue. See C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup
Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt for more detail."

If you are install BCM from the original CD that came with Office, you might

I have the same problems!

I managed to install BCM 2003 V2 update, SP1, SP2 and SP3.

SP4 installation ends with the same message "failed to
install the required component Microsoft SQL Server Express (MSSMLBIZ).
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager Update (SP4)
cannot continue. See C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup
Bootstrap\LOG\----.-- (different for every attempt) for more detail.". This
message is always there regardless if I do the SP4 installation after the V2
update or after the SP3 update.

Any ideas?

Try to install Sql Server Express 2005 SP2 by itself. It is available
as a download from microsoft.com.

Once it installs correctly, then try reinstalling BCM SP4.
