BCWS greater than BAC

While trying to use Project to calculate EVM metrics I created an activity
that has a greater bcws value than bac. Since intuitively I know that this
should never be the case, can anybody explain what conditions would make MS
Project make this mistake? Armed with this information I might be able to
avoid it in the future.

The Baseline Cost (BAC) field can be edited directly, whereas the BCWS field
is always calculated by Project. So, maybe someone edited the BAC field
after the baseline was set, thus causing the mismatch.
