Before I set up 2003, lingering 2000 problem

A

Ariel

I am about to set up Office 2003 pro. I have Office XP pro installed right
now. Trouble is, I also have a lingering installation of Word 2000...
I installed Word 2000 seperately a long time ago, and it still sits in the
add/remove programs menu. (I have tried to uninstall it a few times...It says
it has uninstalled [I even put the CD in to do it with] but then still sits
on that add/remove menu.) I don't notice it much b/c when I click on 'Word'
in the start menu, Word XP opens. But, when I try to run Office Update, it
only gives me the options of updating office 2000 (install SR-1, etc...). So,
I can't even update Office XP.
I want to install Office 2003, but wonder if I should get rid of this
lingering problem first. I could uninstall everything Office first, but then
I'd lose my settings etc.
What should I do?

From the info on the links you gave me, I note that this utility:
• The Office 2000 File and Registry Eraser Utility does not run on operating
systems later than Windows 2000.
• The Office 2000 File and Registry Eraser Utility has not been tested with
Microsoft Windows XP.

I am currently running Windows XP...
My computer came with Windows ME and with Word 2000. I installed Office 2000
Premium later. Later, I installed Windows XP Pro, and then later Office XP
Pro.
Additionally, I still use MS Project 2000.

Can I still use these tools to remove Word 2000?
Is there a way I can just get Windows Update to realize that I do not have
Office 2000 anymore?
I am doing all this so that I can confidently upgrade to Office 2003 Pro, am
I going about it in the proper way (getting rid of old annoyances first)?
Thank you,
Ariel

Hi, Ariel. It's good that you read the instructions. I wouldn't try
the utility with Windows XP; it might work just fine, or it might mess
up your Office installation to the point where you have to uninstall and
reinstall. I think your approach of fixing old problems before
upgrading is a good one. But now that you've already upgraded twice and
are about to do it a third time, and as the annoyance doesn't seem to be
adversely affecting how Office is working, and since you don't want to
do a clean install, I'd say it's probably better to let sleeping dogs
lay.
From the info on the links you gave me, I note that this utility:
