Being taken seriously if you use FrontPage

T

Tom Miller

could you be a painter if you use one size and one brand of brush?I hadn't thought of that analogy since I am willing and able to tweak html,
css and a bit of javascript. But what I am looking at is that Dreamweaver
is often used as a "one tool does it all" type of approach just like FP.

Neither program does the image editing. Both can be used to code html,
javascript and css directly. I have heard statements that DW produces
"cleaner" code which maybe true but perhaps with Htmltidy running behind FP
it would be a moot point.

Not sure I have teased out all of your meaning yet. Thank you for making me
think/stew :)

Chris,
As a longtime FP hobbyist/user would I be happier with the user interface of
the Expressions Web design product (eg. is it still microsoft office like?)
or Dreamweaver?

That's a great question.
I think you'd be best served by Expression Web because it's got a more
familiar interface.
There's a lot of new stuff, and some of the old stuff is missing (some
deservedly and some not), it's a good program and I can see it transitioning
into something really top notch (based on the difference between EW1 and
EW2).

Thank you Chris, in one of the articles you posted earlier in this thread
you said that one of the really useful features of FP was its ability to
manage multiple websites. Can I assume Expressions Web carrys over the same
ease of use? (I understand Expressions Web doesn't use FPSE which makes
managing websites easier but otherwise?).

Thanks,
Tom

Hi I dont ofter much post to the Group, normally just take in points
of interest. However, this time you have raised a subject normally
responded to by the pureists and Dreamweaver defenders.

We should first just consider the purpose of a web site, Im thinking
here of getting your point of interest or business into the public
domain, well enough so the public find your site significant and of
interest and want to click you.

Its time the pureists to just sit back for a minute. If a FrontPage
site can beat all the others to top spot and represent their point in
an articulate and visually interesting way, then its objective
acheived. It really does not matter how it was written!

I just get so fed up with the Deamweavers who can only see their own
narrow point. Yes you have one, but one of many,

My message to FrontPage users is really learn from this and other
Groups, make your site the best, its the only way they will ever learn
to accept you. Make you site number 1 in Google, then sit back and
smile.

I heard that too but it's just like any other editor ... turn a few toolbars
on and it will produce exactly what buttons you push... meaning its the
webmaster that is in charge .... there are more non validating dw sites than
theere are p one's .. mainly because that stick everyone likes to beat fp
users with makes 'some' of us that like to get thing's right sit up and take
notice about the code... web editors can produce the correct code .. you
just have to use them correctly.. that applies to any web editor... best
advice is to turn off the formatting toolbar... and if your using fp get
topstyle lite for your css ... as the css editor is clunky (though I learnt
css on it) . if ew you don't need to bother. Get the html tidy addon for
Firefox and don't use preview in fp ...dump the bots and you won't have that
much trouble with validation (exception includes) dw fp and ew are all web
editors and do what they do best ... they are not designed for image
editing... the same as word and publisher are not web editors and should not
be used as such.

Does a large enough group of employers take you seriously that you can get
a job as a web designer / developer if you use FrontPage?

Tom

It depends on your skills not on the editor you use.. if you know what your
doing then using fp is a bonus because you save time with it.. a good
webmaster knows that using tools to get the job done is just that ..
tools...

if you can code so your code validates if you can code css.... your off to a
very good start.

If youd do not use fp with bots (exception includes) then great.. but I
agree with others... get yourself and update to ew2 .. there is a 60 day
trial ... check it out

Thank you netman. You will find additional arrows for your bow either in

bigotry and so on...

It's still good.
you can use the "metadata" to manage groups of webs, etc.
I've got no problems with EW VS FP in that regard.
