*bold* and _italic_ ignored

In Word 2003, I've just discovered that Word appears to ignore the
Autoformat option to replace *bold* and _italic_ with real formatting.

I just made this discovery in a document I'm working on, but the problem
persists even with a fresh document. Toggling that Autoformat setting has
no effect - the real formatting is never supplied.

All the other replacement options (ordinal, fractions, hyperlinks, etc)
work fine - it's only those two that seem to be affected.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Please disregard. I found the cause of the problem and have fixed it.
Autoformat as you type" duplicates some of the Autoformat options settings
and the *bold* _italic_ option was not checked there.
