Borders

When adding Borders to multiple lines/paragraphs, sometimes the Border will
go around everything highlighted and other times it will create an individual
line for each line/paragraph. Especially when you are numbering items, like
this:
1. Milk
2. Bread
3. Cereal
4. Banana
If you highlight the text, add a Border there's no telling if your'll get a
Border ALL the way around, or 4 separate Borders around each line? Why?

Are you applying borders to the paragraphs or the text? Are you applying
Outside Border or All Borders?

I'm sorry I thought I gave one example. I'm talking about multiple lines of
text with paragraph marks at the end of each paragraph or short line. And
I'm not sure what you mean by Outside Borders and All Borders? I'm placing a
border on all sides of the text; top, buttom, left, right. I've tried in the
Format Menu, Borders and Shading as well as the Tables and Borders Toolbar.

I just don't understand why a Border gets applied around each line of text
(with a paragraph) mark, and other times not. I can create a border without
text and then move multiple lines of text inside and sometimes that works,
but not always.

Thanks again

When you apply borders to a selection, you can apply borders to "Paragraph"
or "Text." You want "Paragraph." If you have selected more than one
paragraph, then "Paragraph" is the default, and if you click on the "Box"
button in the Format | Borders and Shading dialog, you'll get a border
around the entire text block, but you also have the option (by clicking on
the appropriate button in the Preview) to apply an Inside Horizontal Border,
which will put a bottom border on every paragraph.

If you are applying the borders using the Borders palette on the Formatting
or Tables and Borders toolbar, you have the choice of "Outside Border"
(around all the text) and "All Borders" (which will apply borders between
paragraphs). There are also separate buttons for Inside Horizontal Border,
Bottom Border, etc.
