Can desktop/laptop mail be sync'd using POP

Can someone direct me to an article about options for
sync'ing mail when using a desktop (in office) and laptop
(on the road) when dialing up through a POP mailbox.
Basically, I want to be able to have the same info in both
places without having to copy my .pst over each time. I
know about Exchange Server, but can't afford it.
