Can I connect my computer to a television to show PowerPoint?

There are many products that do this. Here is an example:

I have never used this particular product and don't endorse in any way. I
am just linking you to this site because it came up on google, and it can
show you the kind of thing you are looking for. Perhaps, someone else here
has a particular converter that they have used and can recommend.

What kind of computer do you have? Post the specs.
Most laptops have compsite or svideo out.

I have a Dell Inspiron 4150. It's about 3 years old and does not appear to
have any video connection on it. I was thinking that there might be some type
of adapter available. David Marcovitz (in another reply) pointed me to a
website for RAM Electronics. Are you familiar with any other, especially one
that might be cheaper?

Thanks, David. This is a good start.

The 4150 has a svideo connector on the right side between the network
connector and the air vent. You can use any standard svideo cable or an
adapter for svideo to composite (RCA connector) from Radio Shack.

Here's some info from the Dell forum:

David is referring to a scan converter wich you can find at any Best Buy or
CompUsa type stores and online starting at around $30. AVerMedia AVerKey
scan converters work well starting at about $85.
