I currently have Office XP on my PC and I recently purchased a new copy of
Office 2003 (full version). Can I "unregister" the XP version so my son can
use it on his laptop?

Yes, if your Office 2003 is the full non-upgrade version. If you purchased
an upgrade Office 2003 and used your Office XP as a qualifying product, then
the Office XP is part of your Office 2003 license.

You do not need to "unregister" the Office XP. Just install and activate.

This is great news. Should I install 2003 before I install XP on the
laptop?

"Should I install 2003 before I install XP on the laptop?"

Forgive me if I do not fully understand the question.

Does not matter. With respect to your son's laptop, Microsoft has a 120
window for activation data. If it has been longer than 120 days since you
activated Office XP on your computer, your son should be able to use
internet activation. Else, just needs to use the telephone option.

When you install Office 2003 on your computer, the installation program will
detect the Office XP and offer to remove it. During the removal process your
settings and such in Office XP will be preserved when Office 2003 is
installed. If your Office XP installation included any Office applications
not included in your Office 2003 edition, those application will be left
intact.

u need to always install software, earliest version first, otherwise there
can be problems.

HUH?! What are you babbling on about?! What possible "problems" could there
be? If you're upgrading you *NEVER* need to install the qualifying product -
merely insert the disc when asked for.

I'd be very intrigued to know what "problems" you think there will be...

The OP says he wants to install Office 2003 on one computer, and
Office XP on another computer, so I seriously doubt the
installation order would make any difference.
