can office for mac open a PC .doc attachment

I receive pc word document as an attachment to an email. I have a mac OS9.2
computer. what do I need to do to open this attachment ? Thank you for this

You may need the Office for Mac.

Have the sender save the files as .rtf to be able to open them in Mac
Office.
