Can you get a virus from downloading

I was given a Microsoft Office disc for 2003 and when I downloaded it to my
computer, I received a Trojan horse virus. My question is, is that how
Norton Antivirus views a download as such? Is it a legit virus or is that
what Norton Antivirus reads it to be?
